What's a water heater TPR valve?

🔧 What a TPR Valve Does: A TPR valve protects your water heater from excessive pressure or temperature, which could otherwise cause the tank to burst or explode.
It automatically opens to release hot water (and steam) if:

• Temperature exceeds 210°F (99°C)
• Pressure exceeds 150 psi (typical setting for residential heaters)

The valve relieves pressure by allowing some hot water to escape, usually through a discharge pipe that leads down to the floor or to a drain.

✅ How to Test a TPR Valve (Safely):You’ll Need:

• A bucket (to catch any discharged water)
• Safety gloves (water may be hot)

Steps:

1. Locate the discharge pipe coming from the TPR valve.
2. Place the bucket under the discharge pipe.
3. Lift the test lever on the TPR valve (the small metal tab you see on the side).
4. You should see a burst of hot water and hear a rush of air.
5. Release the lever – it should snap back into place and stop leaking.

⚠️ Important Safety Tips:

• If the valve continues to drip after testing, it may be faulty and needs replacement.
• Never block or cap the discharge pipe.
• Always test when the water heater is not actively heating, ideally after it has been idle for a bit.

🛠️ When to Replace the Valve:

• Leaks or drips continuously
• Doesn’t open when tested
• Corrosion or visible mineral buildup
• It’s more than 3–5 years old and hasn't been tested or replaced
