There are many seemingly innocent sources of water vapor or humidity in your home. For example, as much as 40 quarts of water per day can come from building materials during the first year after installation. Also, surprisingly, an unvented gas range contributes far more moisture load in the home than showering or bathing. Each burner on a natural gas range produces between 1-2 pints of water vapor per hour just from burning natural gas! Storing firewood indoors is a bad idea for lots of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that one chord of green firewood produces 3.5 pints of water vapor DAILY! Washing the floor of a room sends 4 pints of water vapor into the air of the home. A small fish aquarium can represent the equivalent of 12 potted plants, and virtually all of the moisture used to water a plant ultimately ends up evaporating into the air of your home. A family of 4 can create as much as 2.5 GALLONS of moisture daily from sweating and breathing. If dishes are hand washed and rinsed, 1/3 pint of moisture can enter the air. And of course showers can produce a quart of water vapor into the air.
What's it all mean? The simple answer is that our daily lives produce far more water vapor and humidity in our homes than a plumbing or roof leak typically would.
